Sounds very interesting indeed. I already watched Spring and Chaos (1996) which is a biography of Miyazawa. Has Spring and chaos any relation to this manga (like being it an adaptation from the manga, since the anime was made afterwards)?
Anyway from Spring and Chaos, one could see that Miyazawi has an very interesting life, so I definitely will take a look on it. By the way, is biographical Manga a new trend? Including this one it makes three biographical manga's that have been published in the last couple of years (Drifting Life and Disappearance Diary are the two others). Being biographical manga something I've never seen before. |

wow, far out ... i was just this morning listening to the ANNcast archives where Zac and Justin talk about the Galactic Railroad anime, which sounds really cool. unlike Zac, i really loved Spring and Chaos and its one of my favorite anime just for its inventive, playful nature (plus i like poetry & haiku, so an anime biography of a japanese poet is a total mind-fest on several levels for me).
it sounds like the Galactic Railroad DVD is hard to find, expensive, and poorly transferred. what i'd really like (if it were possible) would be a copy of the reversioned one Justin designed for himself for his own viewing based partly off the Region 2 higher quality transfer, but i guess that's an impossible dream. i've gotten to the point where i'm somewhat more interested in collecting manga than anime, and this new translation sounds really cool. i can't wait for it to be available. This is very interesting. I would love to have the chance to read this. I wonder if there are any plans to have this picked up?
I always get 'Galactic Railroad' and 'Spring and Chaos' mixed up mainly because I had this weird feeling about them being created by the same person, (while not knowing they were) then realizing they were even though the had different direction. I think what made me realize was that both features have a similar themes found in his work. About life and death, the inter-dimensional train to the afterlife and beyond. Didn't know he was the original author behind 'Pom Poko'. I'd show this one to my niece but I think it's a little too deep for her. |

The original Japanese edition of the manga biography was published in 1993, and "Spring and Chaos" released in 1996 in Japan, but I doubt the latter was based on the former. The biography is based on a book of episodes from Miyazawa's life written by an older classmate and later friend of Miyazawa's, published in 1942 (and even this, a later revision). Since this book is a primary source for Miyazawa studies, I am sure the makers of the animation had reference to it. In any case, the biggest difference between the book and the anime is that the former covers his entire life while the movie depicts his adult years.

Miyazawa was an interesting dude (just did a paper on him), but if this preview is representative of the manga as a whole, it looks a bit too manic and random to be really useful. =/

i have to say i didn't even look at the preview until several hours after i had posted my initial excited comment, and now that i've seen the art i'm totally un-thrilled. it's a shame this didn't get a better treatment.

How could anyone say no to a manga biography? And for the guy who made Galactic Railroad? Which eventually inspired Matsumoto to do GE999?
I need to watch more of Miyazaw's stuff, but I will definitely be looking to pick this up. |
