Typical One Piece volume is no more dimensional emotionally than this, yet it does not prevent that manga from both being spectacularly excellent entertainment and receiving higher than "C" marks from Rebecca and her reviewer colleagues.

So I am not sure how much these review marks/ratings are consistent and fair.

There's no way for reviews/ratings to be 'fair' in the way I think you mean. These are reviews, meaning based on personal opinions. The exact same book could receive D from one person and A from another. There's no mathematical system that dictates the 'score'. The letter grades and the pros/cons are more to give you a really quick idea of the review's overall evaluation.

Onwards - I haven't gotten to read this volume yet but I'll be buying it as soon as it hits bookstore shelves next week! All the characters have been so entertaining.

I really liked this part of the review, very well said for describing Toriko:

Thank you, kuriousity - that means a lot. I cannot tell you how much I'm enjoying writing the reviews, so I'm glad that you're enjoying reading them!


MaxSouth, I'm a little behind in One Piece since I switched from reading it in French to English when Viz started catching up, but in general I find it has more emotion to it than Toriko. This is not to say that I don't enjoy both series a lot - as kuriousity said, a review is a subjective thing. For example, I'm from a rural part of a rural state where hunting is mostly for food and generally considered akin to shopping, albeit somewhat more fun and exciting. Does this affect my view of Toriko's plot? Doubtless. I typically teach courses on folklore and fairy tales - does this change how I read parts of Skip Beat? Absolutely. These little things can make my view differ from yours or Carlo's or Carl's.

As a p.s., I generally like everything I read - I'm totally omnivorous when it comes to printed materials. The fun (for me, because I'm a nerd) part is going back and rereading objectively to see what I missed in my first, joy-hazed reading. Smile

I agree that reviewing is subjective thing, but if a reviewer thinks that certain manga is one dimensional emotionally comparing to another, then it would be fair to raise the same matter on other manga as well.

So I do not mean that everything can be mathematically accurate, it is obviously impossible. However, the ratings would be more fair/consistent if reviewers would have kind of list of matters to think/cover like:
1) ...
2) ...
3) how many dimensions emotionally this work has comparing to other manga of this genre?
4) ...

So if it would turn out that in terms of emotional dimensions One Piece and Toriko are in fact the same, then the basis for the mark should be different than that. For example, you then could ponder about why OP moves you emotionally more -- and even though it is the same one dimension, then may you could uncover specific examples and tools that manga uses to employ that one dimension stronger than Toriko.

Thus this kind of list would prompt additional level of reasoning and analysis comparing to the case where reviewer just expresses his/her thoughts without specific matters to think of. Not that working without such "reminder" list is bad, but working with it could be even better and give more consistent ratings.
