Yay, you're finally giving a standalone review of one of my favourite marriage manga series ever!! Very Happy (I know it featured in RTO as well but not recently so I figured you may have dropped it)

I agree with pretty much all of what you said. Yes Hokuto feels like the stereotypical sexy jerk in the beginning, and Chiwa can get a little whiny/petty (and she cries a lot)... basically, I know this series has its flaws, but I love how it openly embraces those flaws so that the narrative flows at a more natural rather than clunky pace. I mean, like you said, Chiwa realizes she's petty in this volume, and what's better is that Hokuto spoiler[comes to realize his flaws (many times) later too. Events like the first time they kiss and have sex are built up to as the formula of the genre requires, but then when they are confronted by everyday problems that could affect their marriage, mainly their trust in one another, its the way they work through it and grow together that makes me feel that this is one of the more realistic marriage mangas out there.]

And of course its a guilty-pleasure kinda series too, what with everyone being so good-looking and the josei sexual tension, but hey that just adds to the fun. ^^ Hope you get around to reviewing the rest of the volumes, I'd like to read your opinions of those too.

I picked this up about a month ago at New England Comics after it was recommended in the josei panel I attended at Otakon this year. It's good to hear that Rebecca liked it, and what she had to say about it that, even though the male lead is a jerk, he does have some redeeming qualities and a lot of his initial cruelty is due to misconceptions (how very Jane Austen?) I'm also excited to hear the female lead is a lot more independent and feistier than I'd been led to believe. It makes me a lot more excited to read it once I get done with Codename: Sailor V!

WoW! I'm really surprised for the review. I really love Happy marriage, and it's great that ANN have an amazing review for this awesome title.
Totally recomended for all the josei/shojo/romantic-comedy fans.

The art and the sexy Hokuto don't disapoint you, totally granted.

Hokuto I just love you, hot jerk.

P.S. Viz please: more Maki Enjouji for me!!!

I wanted to like Happy Marriage!?. I truly did since it was the only mature-rated Shojo Beat title I thought I would enjoy out of the ones that were announced at the time. It is soapy and amusing. The misconceptions Chiwa and Hokuto have are of course a driving force. But for me, eventually the characters’ behavior reached a level that just killed any and all romance and sexiness the series had going. I can’t remember what volume it was that I lost all desire to keep reading even if the characters and finale turned out better. Sad

Wow that hero's character design totally looks like Finder's Asami Ryuichi (the number one fan favorite BL seme). This manga seems like it would be a self-insert fan dream, and there's nothing wrong with that. Wink
