... wow... I wonder if it would be possibly for them to use some of the manga commercials they air in Japan. Those usually have original animation...
*Cringes at the thought of all the DNAngel volumes being sold out of stores because of the commercials, and her never being able to find them*

if they sell out, they'll print more. and more $$$ for Tokyopop.

it's nice to see distributors advertising on TV. FUNimation did their DBZ movies for a while, and Bandai advertised Char's Counterattack and Jin Roh and a few others on TV in 2002. I would've thought they were too broke for this.

oh god, manga on tv?

i really hate it when BOOKS are advertised on tv, it's so lame. certainly doesn't make me want to buy them. harry potter did FINE without a commercial o_o although harry potter is probably not much of an example, haha. Anime hyper

i dunno, it looks so cheap to me when books have tv commercial, like it's so bad that the company has to make a freaking COMMERCIAL for it. Anime hyper

so what kind of images, exactly, will be put into the commercials? pages from the manga? o_o ohdeargod.

I agree that the idea of advertising books on TV is ridiculous (but hey, if they can advertise tampons Shocked ...). But I also think you're kinda missing the point. It's not about a partical manga title. It's about the industry. They want to let more people know that manga exists. By advertising a perticular title on TV, what they are in effect doing is sending out a message "Hey, we exist! We're cool! Check us out!". Also, many people who have never heard of manga before might be intrigued by the fact that Tokyopop doesen't feel the need to explain what manga is and doesen't even translate manga's title to English (I'm ony guessing here since I haven't seen the commercials yet).
So, as long as it's good for the industry and increases people's awareness of manga, I don't have a problem with it. These days you have to think creatively and if it means advertising graphic novels on TV than be it.

I'm not sure if the benefits will make up for the costs. I just don't see a large enough potential audience out there to make up for the cost.

I doubt that's the case when they advertise Janet Evanovich's latest book or the new Left Behind book on TV. I think it's just a way to say, "Hey, I have a new book out. Go and read it."

Think logically. They'll probably just put something like "New from Tokyopop..blah blah blah...*show cover images*...in stores now or coming to stores blah blah."

Well, this is a way to find out, hm? The potential audience is quite large...I mean, teenagers watch tv. If something cool pops up, they'll rush to the store to check it out. Oh, and look at the networks they are airing on "Cartoon Network, MTV, Spike TV, G4, and Tech TV." It's not like they're showing these ads on Style Network, E! Entertainment, and Lifetime.

I really wonder what the commercials are going to be like as well. I've only seen one manga commercial, and it was a Japanese one featuring characters from manga in the Shonen Sunday magazine playing baseball. It was animated anime style, and Inu Yasha was a riot. Though... I don't know if there's any commercials like that for DNAngel and Saikyuki. They could have some kind of deal to use the anime series footage... but meh. Dunno how well that woult work out, and I don't see how them putting manga pages on tv or a picture of the cover is going to make people think it's cool.

And I don't see how showing a woman fixing a leaky boat with a tampon makes someone want to buy the product. But, that's the beauty of advertising, no?

Thats a nice remark there lianncoop. Well, I think that advertisement for manga on TV will be fine. I'm guessing they will just show the like cover of the book, then say where it is bought and a shot say on what the manga is about. And as commercials go, they never really show exaclty what the product is suppose to do. Wink

I find this to be an excellent idea. After all, it's not likely to be a failed experiment, given the stations they want to advertise on. It's a good way of saying... hey, we have these titles, come and look at what we've got. While it would be a good idea to have it done along with the anime counterparts, it's not likely to happen since Saiyuki and DNAngel are ADV properties and therefore won't be shown on those other networks. In the end, it's a good way to see if more are being bought and if so, cause them to increase the titles being advertised which will lead to more sales which leads to more acquisitions which leads to... well, you get the idea. Wink

I'm not sure advertising manga on MTV would be worthwhile, considering that their target audience isn't exactly known to be literate.

They don't actually have to read the book. They just have to go out and buy it.

Lol, I actually keep those commercials in mind when shopping for that product. "Oooo, this one was able to plug up a boat, or so they said on tv. I think there's little chance of leakage on that one, but wait, this one is a really thin pad that even when cut in half still manages to hold it all..." Anime smallmouth Books are just boring to watch on tv. They need a fun way to advertise the manga.

My guess is that they take the way of Magic: the Gathering.

Get a buncha of folks at the MTV Beach House and give them various manga to "read," and create commercials where people do cosplay, and try to act out scences from the manga. Hilarity ensues, cue card with info about manga.

I dunno about the cosplay bit... that might scare away potential customers. Wink

In all seriousness though, I'm hopeful that they will find a way that makes the advertising become fun. I dunno, maybe an ad concept that's similar though. Perhaps you do this instead:

You see a guy reading a manga, a flash occours:

Then all of a sudden, he's surrounded by the manga world. Think of it like a live action Fushigi Yuugi or something. Show a dark scene at night when doing DNAngel, and the guy sees somebody flying overhead... They could probably do a from behind shot with a wig and perhaps well done CGI wings. I think it could be done in a way that makes people look at the TV and go... "whoa." I've almost got in mind what could make an excellent commercial, but I'm not in the mood for writing a screenplay. Smile
