I loved watching this show streaming, but I find it hard to justify buying these releases when the contents of the show are so small. I dream of a day, once the final owarimonogatari arc has been finished, when I can buy the entire Monogatari franchise. Sure, I'd have to drop well over $150, but to get all of this franchise I'd say its totally worth it. Koimonogatari is one release I might end up buying anyway, Kaiki has an amazing point of view.

Although the arc (and the entire season) was very good, one thing that really annoys me about it (and for that mind, the season) is how it is so accusing towards the characters. Everyone has a problem of personality and/or outlook on life - which is what you kind of expect, given that people are flawed creatures - but the show will not tolerate that. Character development in Monogatari is never a positive process, always negative. It builds its characters up only after mercilessly tearing them down and essentially making them feel like crap. Characters never confront their foibles but instead - through other characters - their foibles (and the show's narrative and moralising) always confronts them. It reminds me of Neon Genesis Evangelion, although at least the characters in that show have the excuse that they were genuinely screwed up.

Easily my least favorite story arc in all of Monogatari thus far. While I do agree that Sengoku was made more interesting, it doesn't really change the fact that this particular story pretty much destroyed any positive opinion I had of her. Personally, I think she's a brat so I never found myself sympathizing with her "problems."

Considering that her transformation is nothing more than a god sized temper tantrum, I think she still comes out as the least interesting character in the franchise.

But even so, you don't get to Hitagi End without this arc, so it serves its purpose.

Fine job, Nick, discussing this arc. Now I see why ANN chose you to do reviews.

Great review. I have yet to fully delve into the second season myself, but I adore the series and am eagerly looking forward to it.

I agree that Nadeko though is one of Hanazawa Kana's strongest roles. Even with the limited I've seen (Bake and Nise persence), she seems to put more into her performance here than some of the others that she's done.

Now, I just hope that Shaft will get on with the Kizumonogatari film so we can finally get a good Araragi-centric story that is not harem focused.

Great review! Really touches on the themes and development that make this arc good.

Where's da dub at, DAWG!?

Sorry that came out a bit bad-like. But seriously where da dubz at?

Other than that Fair review. ANN should do video reviews next time. Wink

Absolutely fantastic review and analysis.

The first quarter of the review perfectly illustrates why Monogatari Second Season surpasses Bakemono and Nisemono so well.

Otorimonogatari and Koimonogatari are by far the peaks of both Second Season and Monogatari as a whole in my opinion thus far, and what I've read about the arcs in "Final Season" I'm definitely ready for these peaks to be surpassed much like Otori and Koi did to the first season.

I don't say this often, but I don't see a dub for this show ever working out. Not only because Monogatari uses a LOT of Japanese wordplay in its humor and story, but the cast will be impossible to replicate. I'm no fan of her, but KanaHana as Nadeko is just...one of the most perfect Japanese casting choices I've even seen, for reasons that are clear once you've seen Nadeko Medusa.

Damn! It's been a while since I found someone agreeing with me, but this review really nails down every bit of why I came to love Nadeko's character. I see folks noting how she's essentially a brat, but dismissing her issues with such simplicity is ignoring what makes her conflict so sympathetic in my eyes. I really feel that Nadeko's buildup was meant for this moment, this arc, and I can't help but feel that she's one of the most underrated characters due to the inherently negative impression she gives off with her antagonistic development (I mean who doesn't love well-developed antagonists? A female one at that?)

I never saw her issue as bratty in nature (they may be petty in scope but not in terms of a personalized psychological trauma/paranoia) and to label them as such, I feel that undermines the very narrative that Monogatari is trying to establish by making these characters larger than life in the way they're portrayed.

Truly one of the shining moments of Second Season, all the more strengthened by Koimonogatari's arc as the wonderful conclusion to this one.

I feel like I'm one of the only people who actually liked Nadeko more than any other character in the show, even before this arc. I guess that I just connect with that character arc pretty much perfectly, even more so, after this arc.

but there's sadly no character commentary or other meaningful bonuses.

I loved the character commentary on the "bake" and "nise" releases. So is there no character commentary for this season at all?

Also, lovely review. Thanks!

This is my 2nd favorite arc of the season. My favorite is, of course, Koimonogatari, because it's centered around the best girl of the series.

spoiler[Kaiki.]

I thought there wasn't any character commentary on the Nise- set from Aniplex USA?

You and me both. I went into this arc interested to see what was going to be done with her character, came out of it thinking that I'd like to never see Sengoku again.
