I translated a few episodes of the TV series (the ones that correspond to the movie plot, by the sounds of it) for TMS back in the day for international sales purposes.
The extremely heavy osaka dialect (and period osaka dialect, at that!) was a challenge, but the content itself was really something. This was great prime-time TV back in its day, and despite being very culturally specific the humanity is universal in it in a way that most anime just doesn't get anywhere close to. The _cats_ are more human in this anime than most humans are in anime these days. |

This is my favorite column on ANN, so I'm sad to hear that it is ending. I like the reviews focusing on one anime better than Mike Toole's columns, which generally cover a bunch of anime, but none of them in much detail.

I have the japanese DVD of the Jarinko Chie movie and wrote a review in German a while back. One thing I love about this movie is the tender look into Osaka's worker class milieu of the sixties/seventies. Even though the humour is black sometimes and people's character appear "low" like in the case of Chie's father, I can't shake off the feeling that Takahata secretly loves the distinct "japaneseness" of this social class and its customs. Moreover, I find the hand drawn animation holds up quite well, even today. There's lots of subtle character animation to be seen throughout the movie.

I'll definitely miss this column, some great anime were introduced to me through your writing. I think my personal favorite of all the Pile of Shame was the Sensualist, a really good anime that scratches my itch to watch niche history anime.

In honor of Pile of Shame ending allow me to reinterpret from "A Letter from Basher"... Ahem:
Dear Justin. As the band said: Two hearts beat as one. When men have been in battle together, they are bonded like the flower and the soil and the sun. And like the moon catches the light... All right, that's enough. Sad to see Pile of Shame go away, but it was just cool to see you write again, Justin. Buried Treasure/Garbage was a big influence on me deciding to start The Land of Obscusion, so it was neat to see you return for a similar-in-concept column for a couple of years. I do understand that it sometimes feels kind of pointless to simply talk about something because it's obscure & probably isn't even all that great, but sometimes it's the thrill of the hunt that makes it worth it. Granted, I'm sure Justin already had most of the stuff he talked about before he even conceived this column, but the idea's the same. Here's to your new, upcoming column, Justin! |

At first I was like, huh, wouldn't watching something really old now and then prevent burnout?, but then I realized that, ah, of course you have to dig through a lot of carp before you find an anime worth writing about.
So, yeah, if you don't want to Pile Of Shame anymore, that's the way it is. FWIW I enjoyed your column. Even if I don't particularly care to dig those anime up myself, it's really interesting to read your insights. I'm glad you're not going to stop Answerman and will start a new column next year for that same reason. Thank you

It's sad to see this column go, but I look forward to your next idea. I must say though that your column did give me a few gems to look into (still gotta get into Musashi no Ken at some point), so I certainly wouldn't say there's no point to this column, it's quite informative and can dig up some nice overlooked stuff as well as hearing your thoughts on some other less obscure titles is great too. Chie the Brat someone only told me about recently, saying it was quite good, so I only added it to my plan to watch list a little while ago.

Saw this film a while ago and rather liked it. Chie is terribly likable, it's sweet without being syrupy (Chie's joy when her parents finally manage to get along for once is intensely adorable), and I like the goofier, more cartoony art-style as a change of pace.
My only real complaint is how after (loosely) organizing the film around Chie and her parents, it spends its last portion on a martial-arts type story about cats, who can now speak (at least for the audience). I'd really like to be able to see the TV series some time. As a footnote, the character Aiko in Ojamajo Doremi is obviously firmly based on Chie; a boisterous Osakan girl with separated parents who chose to stay with her dad to "take care of him", although this version of the story is more melodramatic (Aiko lacks the contempt for her dad that Chie has for hers alongside her love). So whether it's this film, the TV series, or the original manga, it's had at least that much influence in Japan if hardly anyone over here has seen it. |

I really liked this column. It was always interesting to read about the treasures and trash adrift in the sea of anime history. Sad to see it go, and. Interested in whatever's coming next.

Pity you do not have an opportunity to take a stab at Gauche the Cellist, another Takahata movie from the 1980s and also (almost) forgotten. It has recently been released in Germany. |

This is the next on my list of Takahata anime to watch. I was really impressed by Hols, not so much PGP, though. This column's got me fired up, though; I think I'll have to watch it tonight.
Sad to see Pile of Shame go, though I guess I won't get that pang of guilt when a new article comes out and I still haven't watched all the previous things that have been in it. |

I'm very fond of Chie —though I've only ever watched it with French subtitles, which means I'm always missing a certain amount! |
