Of course, you know everyone's gonna be gnawing at the bone for Mother 3 now.

I played a patched ROM of it...it's very grindy, as you might expect of such an old JRPG, and that was even with a double XP modifier the translation patch added.

Freaked out when I found out about this. Already bought and downloaded. Really hope this means there's a good chance Mother 3 will follow!
It was also really cool to see Shigesato Itoi give that message. Must feel crazy knowing that something he created decades ago is still loved and played by people.

But of course! Earthbound apparently did pretty well for them on the Virtual Console. Obviously Mother/Earthbound Beginnings is gonna be noticeably more dated the rest of the series, but I do think fans are passionate enough to jump on board and have it sell decently.

It'd be nice if all three games were released on one 3DS cart, so I'd have a reason to pick up that handheld.

After the reignited fame it got on Gintama, it was bound to happen.

I wonder if Nintendo got some of the people at Starmen.net to work on this one. But yeah, now the pressure is on Nintendo to release Mother 3, especially now that Game Boy Advance games are available on the Wii U Virtual Console.

Still haven't gotten around to really playing my Wii U VC copy of Earthbound, but I'm very happy for Mother/Earthbound fans to see Nintendo finally allowing the series to be released in the West.

I have the GBA version I got from a convention, but now I want a Wii U even more. I am SO going to ask for a Wii U for Christmas!

Yeah, I agree. The Wii U is waaaaay too expensive and I'd much rather not spend over 200 bucks just so I can buy $20 games on it.

I don't have a Wii U, but this is still fantastic news. Of course the real story is what this means for a possible Mother 3 (Earthbound 2?) release, but in my book Mother/Earthbound 0/Earthbound Beginnings is one of the best 8-bit RPGs on its own and it's great to see them put out the translation they've had ready for over two decades but never released (the Earthbound 0 English ROM you may have played is actually an official translation; they were going to release the game as Earthbound but scrapped the project because the NES was already on its way out).
Anyway, Mother is a very underrated game, and one of the first games to have a real story with actual themes. Seriously, it's a sparsely-written story because of space restrictions, but there's more going on there than in most SNES RPGs. It's a long struggle to beat, but just stick with it and you won't be sorry.

Gee would have been nice if Nintendo would have released the game on the DS YEARS AGO!!! There's nothing wrong with putting it on the Wii/Wii U, but they could have also made money putting it up for DL on the Nintendo Shop. Gamers have been asking for this game for YEARS as well as the other installments that we didn't get.

Chrno: Nintendo hates Mother/Earthbound fans, 'cus we jumped ship to the Playstation for FF7. So they've been getting their revenge by teasing us with Mother characters in Smash Bros., or with the alleged N64 version of the third game. Or the only RPGs they'd deliberately bring over until now were Pokemon and Fire Emblem-related. Hell, even the lesser Dragon Quests got more love from them than Earthbound. But I guess Shigesato finally gave them a pretext to at least bring over the first Mother game. So, be sure to thank him, not them.

Mother had already been localized and was pretty much ready for release way back in the day. It was cancelled, and now Nintendo is just using that for the Virtual Console release.
Mother 3 would involve quite a bit more work, since that has never been legally localized. I also doubt that Nintendo would use Tomato's translation of the game (though he did offer it to them for free, iirc).

Very cool to see the original Mother finally come over; I just bought it today. I'm actually now expecting Nintendo to sooner or later announce Mother 3 for the Wii U Virtual Console, with an English release called EarthBound Returns. Hell, Nintendo should just buy the highly-acclaimed fan translation the game received a few years back, just like when XSEED did the same for some of their Ys releases.

I think it was a mistake to release Earthbound on the Wii-U. If anything, its perfectly suited for the 3DS. I hope they release a version of it for that platform soon.
