It's a shame that this anime doesn't have an English dub. This sounds like a good show. I wonder how they would have handled the different nationalities on the show? Also,with the American baking team,I wonder do they have an immigrant on the team? Since the U.S. has a lot of different cultures here,including Japan,it would be interesting to see how they're treated,the female in the American flag bikini not withstanding.

Actually, the American girl is an immigrant - her family came from Germany when she was a little girl, and a second team member is of Italian descent, which is mentioned with regards both to his baking style and his enormous amount of family in attendance.

Thanks a lot,Princess_Irene. I've thought about re-doing a post called "Fictional Immigrants to the United States in anime." You've helped give me something for it. But still,I wish that "Yakitate!! Japan" had an English dub. That would,at least,make me want to buy it. Again,thanks. I appreciate the info a lot.

Personally I think this show has a lot more heart than Souma, and Part 2 has a lot of great moments. If this was part 3 of the anime, I can justify a C, but Part 2 has a lot of great episodes with very little bad moments. Every person I showed Yakitate to loves it so I don't get it.

This is true, Yakitate is great. I like Souma and all, but it doesn't compare. The only thing I really hate about it is the way too over-the-top villains. Yukino and especially the St. Pierre owner. The whole spoiler[attempted murder] over a bread competition is just way too much, this show is at it's best when it's being lighthearted. |

I like Yuichi as the villain, because he is imposing, and his Japanese seiyuu really relishes on the role, but Yukino is a bit TOO ridiculous even for the show's standards. Honestly, episodes 1-52 I consider almost perfect in terms of comedy, but 53-69 is where the series went downhill. It's still funny, but you can tell they are rushing the pace, some characters are really get the short end of the stick (Kawachi is my favorite character and he gets a terrible treatment) and the finale was kind of a wtf moment after moment. |

Monaco arc is definitely the weakest part of the show and it doesn't ever recover from that even though the final episodes are improvement to the Pierrot bullshit. But that first third is a really fun set of episodes.
I've only seen the first two episodes of Food Wars but it didn't impress me at all. |

Animax-Asia did an English dub for the show, but it's not available anywhere else AFAIK. I was watching the Tagalog dub when it premiered ten years ago. Recent reruns don't hold up to my memories of enjoying it, unfortunately. |

Although I've never seen the Animax dub for "Yakitate!! Japan" that fuuma_monou talked about,I wonder why didn't Discotek do it's own English dub. They probably would have done a good job with it. Maybe one day,we'll see one.

Food Wars takes longer to get into than this series, and yes, Yakitate!! Japan does have a lot more heart, so I probably should have been more specific in the review as to what I meant.
 In terms of ease of watching and loveable protagonists, this show has that one beat, hands down. Where Food Wars does better is in capturing the art of cooking and making the cooking competitions more tense, as well as leaving out "joke" characters like Pierrot and his attendant shenanigans. So I feel like it holds the viewer a little better as it goes on - once the show got going, I've rarely found myself reluctant to watch it, whereas there were definitely a few times with Yakitate where I had to force myself to keep watching.
@Snomaster1 This is a Nozomi (RightStuf) release rather than Discotek, but they rarely dub anything anymore either. (And their Lucky Penny imprint's releases are pretty identical to the Discotek ones on the surface, so it's easy to get confused.) |

Thank you for answering, quite frankly didn't expect you to comment (albeit I don't think it's to me directly). I haven't watched a lot of Souma, but to me he feels more like a generic Shounen lead, nothing bad, mind you, just not as memorable as Asuma. As for Pierrot, I love him for one major reason: Tomokazu Seki. He is my favorite Seiyuu of all time and he does bring a lot to the role. More than just yelling and making silly voices, he does make a character who is more of a joke into something more two or even three dimensional, especially at the end of the arc. The anime in general has a phenomenal cast. Maybe the issue is the fact the show is slightly dated, though honestly, I didn't have the issue when I rewatched this arc. Like I said earlier, I find this show hilarious, and I am not the kind of guy that will laugh from any anime that calls itself "comedy". In any case, I would say that the last arc, is the worst one. If you had no patience for Pierrot, I don't think you'd like how the series devalues itself. I still like it, but just "like". |

You're welcome! I try to answer people in these threads, especially if the issue was that I didn't clarify enough.
Honestly, I wouldn't have made it through Food Wars the anime if I hadn't already read the manga (and, you know, been assigned the show as a streaming review), so I really do get people not liking it. And in terms of lead, Azuma is much more memorable (and charming) than Soma. I'd love to see him in a tighter show, really. I had a paragraph about Seki Tomokazu that I had to cut, because it was basically a fangirl rant. Incidentally, my sister kept calling Pierrot "Chichiri" the whole time I was watching. He couldn't quite save Pierrot for me, but I always enjoy listening to him. (And Koyasu Takehito.)
I am leery of that third part since I've head from multiple people that it's the weakest... |

So interesting how certain things are more appealing for others. I really enjoyed Pierrot's story arc. from what I recall. Can't recall which jokes are relevant or not. But I did like the ones about the US suing everyone. Lots of people outside of the US always think this or believe the stories.
For me the stereotypes is just a thing I'm used to in anime. I still chuckle at the jokes with Kid. He's like an 80s American creepy stereotype and I love it. The music makes it too.

Loved this show up until the Yakitate!! 9 arc where i thought it went severely downhill, got way too over the top and stopped making me laugh at all.
Still the thing i remember most about this show, "k-kore wa!". |

Irene's reply in this thread makes more accurate assessment of this show than the review itself; comparison to Food Wars helps.
Agree that on technical merits Yakitate!! is poor, as by far most of anime before 2006, when the industry has started to switch to high definition (720p or even 1080p). And yes, as story, Yakitate!! is probably the best among all cooking-related anime. I like Food Wars, too, though (despite ejaculations and boob-shaking orgasms everyone who consumes food has there). It is just feels more schematic than Yakitate. |
