This title totally slipped my radar. I enjoyed Angel Sanctuary and Cain held my interest, so I will definitely give this a go. I love that it's hard cover with quality paper. I really appreciate it when publishers are able to go the extra mile with that. (I know it isn't always cost effective for them to do so.)

Sorry, but that's an urban legend. There's no record of the rhyme prior to the late Victorian era, when it first appeared Mother Goose, or the Old Nursery Rhymes, and that version has vastly different lyrics from what most of us are familiar with:
There were numerous other variants, yet the Black Death theory always focuses on the "standard" lyrics we know today, as though that one and not the others is the true original form. |

I've been loving this series, never read anything the mangaka's other works. But, I was a bit surprised how dark it seemed. Don't know what I was really expecting in that aspect, but it did take me a little to adjust.
Hahaha! I'm glad I'm not alone with that one. I find there are times when she really gets on my nerves, but I think that it may have to do with the flip flopping I see the character doing. At times, they go with their evil intentions, then end up changing tracks a little too quickly. I understand why it happens, but there are times when the inner monologue of the character doesn't mesh with exactly what the character's goal is. |

I had purchased some of this series before Yen published it. But, their hardcover edition made me double-dip. I think Demon from Afar is a good return to some of Kaori Yuki's notable past form. The Count Cain series has always been my favorite of her work and it has some disturbing and clever narratives using religious elements, folklore, etc.
Super happy to have someone else besides VIZ pick up her work in English. Now if only some of the older titles would be available in English too. |

This review had me Googling the Hebrew letter "Tav" and the name "Sorath". Interesting stuff. Kaori Yuki's work tends to be very dark and brooding, not to mention very long and out of print (I think the only completed series I read by her was the three volume Fairy Cube). Her art is gorgeous, though. And may I say that a lack of incest is a good thing?
Re: Ring Around the Rosie--even if it's not specifically from the Black Plague, it does seem to be talking about death en masse of some sort? Now I want to Google that, too! |

I liked Demon from afar but sometimes I feel the jumps between timelines can be messy at times. It certainly requires a little patient to adjust.
The art as always is a delight, and few authors draw clothes like her. A warning though, this is Kaori Yuki... it started dark and it will get darker be sure of that. But it sure is interesting how she uses dark urban fantasy. And I do find interesting how she mades references to stuff happening in the present either for the ocasional laugh (because even if dark it's what she is known she can sure be hilarious) or to show us a character. |
