Shota alert! Is it one where "he's very mature for his age" is a all too often repeated phrase? Couldn't get past that factor in The World is Still Beautiful either, even if the anime did claim he was 15 & not 11 as in the manga.

The only comedy of this type I've got a chuckle from was Recorder to Randoseru since, for the most part, it got its laughs from a) having the characters act their age despite looking older/younger than they are & b) having the guy repeatedly get arrested when concerned strangers see him walking with his elementary school classmates & call the police. Went down the creepy rabbit hole in the 3rd season, but hey that's Japan for you.

Shame this got rated so low, it sounded like it might be a fun read, but I guess they play up their gimmick way too much. Might still give it a shot, some shojo series are hit or miss depending on the reader.

Funny, I too was going to bring up The World Is Still Beautiful. I enjoyed that anime, and had no idea that they had changed the male MC's age until afterwards. Still, I guess that the setting of the series made a difference for me. Among royalty, there was somethings when it came to marriages...that would make what happened not seem out of the ordinary. Laughing

But, there is something with this one that does rub me the wrong way. Guess that, and I'd say this is an assumption, with the character still being in elementary school, I just can't get over the maturity difference that should be there.

And, make the character look older than he is, kind of has me thinking that some of what would be "physical comedy" that could come into play...would creep me out.

Still, I'm not going to totally discount the series. I will be keeping tabs on it, just to see if it does enter (what for me may be) creepy territory.

If it is handled well, I may end up getting the series.

While I'll never read First Love Monster because of the whole Older Female Younger Male genre, I did enjoy Recorder and Randsell because the boy, Atsushi, had a girlfriend, Hina, his own age. Despite looking like a grown ass man, he acted like a 5th grader. His sister's friend, however, pissed me off for crushing on him like he was an adult, trying to look pass the fact that he's 11 years old.

Yeah I didn't much care for it when they had characters look at him like he was an adult who just happened to be 11, as opposed to an 11 year old who just happened to look adult. Same with that new teacher who just couldn't get over how attractive he was & they just had to make the recipient of a few "oh look I just fell over & grabbed your boob" jokes. 3rd season lost me when they introduced that guy whose into the sister precisely because she looks like a child. That crossed the imaginary line.

Yeah, I didn't like the negative reactions to his appearance from bystanders and cops. I hope Japan's law enforcement don't just arrest men for simply standing next to little girls. Why wouldn't they have thought first that Atsushi might be the father or bother and not some total stranger looking to prey on an unsuspecting middle schooler??? Confused

Yeah, story wise and character wise this is pretty dreadful so far. However, I actually think the art is very good in that the character designs are incredibly cute and similar to Chaco Abeno's style imo. In fact the art will most likely have me coming back for the next volume (although I'm also curious to see how truly bad this will become). I guess this is a guilty pleasure/hate read sort of thing now.

Once more, we have the familiar ANN hyper-moralism, American style, that condemns everything that comes from Japan that is not Moral in the American Style.

This is so tiresome that normally I avoid ANN like the plague so as not to be subjected to it, but I stumbled on it in this case. You people are nuts. You go after Japanese media, presumably at least in part because it comes out of a view of the world a bit different from that of the USA—and then you insist that its morality strictly adhere to that of the USA, or you won't read it.

So narrow! It makes me sad to see it.

Ever since I heard about the premise for this series, I've thought it sounded creepy. I'm glad that this review talks about it.

Also, I'm gonna be suspicious of anyone who claims that people dislike of the age difference in this series is purely due to cultural differences. I bet if you asked a random person on the street in Japan, they'd think it was creepy as well.

Personally, I think what's sad is that people take their complete understanding of a country's values from a certain kind of comic.

Exactly. The same people on here that adore Sailor Moon (where there's an age difference between Usagi and Mamoru too) hate on age differences in every other manga/anime they review. I too avoid reviews on here (since the news is okay, but the reviews are bias and I remember a really negative one from a while back that enraged me).

Also, guys, it's fiction. Obviously no one would be okay with this in real life. It's just a story. You all need to go outside.

I have this one on my list of one's to check out when I get a chance. I'll probably wait for volume 2 to come out though and see where things go - I hadn't realized it was considered a comedy.

I do admit, I am curious about all the negativity towards the age difference - I don't remember seeing it mentioned nearly as much with the review or comments on the first volume of A Bride's Story - where it's a 20 year old woman with a 12 year old husband. This one they are at least both still children.

Is it just a difference in Bride's Story being historical and this not, the comedic aspects, or just an overall difference in how the relationship and age gap are handled?

Yeah, it's fiction, so why are you complaining about someone's review of it? Not like any of the reviewers on here are physically preventing you from buying or enjoying any of this stuff. Honestly, I don't know why you're on a website like this if all you're going to do is complain about "bias." Yes, the reviews here are biased. So are all the other reviews on all the other sites. The only thing that is unbiased is a literal plot summary, because reviewers are people with opinions that won't always match your own.

And I haven't read Sailor Moon myself, but I'm pretty sure no high schoolers were dating elementary school students. Which is the big point of contention here.

Everyone's ok with Sailor Moon because Usagi is a younger girl and Mamoru is an older boy.

Get it???

I am just going to say if the genders were reversed the outcry would be so much more. Ro Kyo bo has the same exact situation, where the protag is a first year high school student and the girls in the last year of elementary, basically an age difference of 4 years at most, and he was not even openly pursing anyone (unlike here where she is dating the kid), and Ro kyo took a lot more flack.

There was a similar manga where the female lead was in her twenties and slept with a kid who ended up being a middle schooler and getting pregnant, and then ended up working at his onsen/public bath house. I gurantee genders get reversed that manga does not get made.
