Man, copyright law should be rewritten. You shouldn't need permission that isn't about making money.

I wonder if Japanese rights holders can be as aggressive as US rights holders. I specifically am referring to that empire that shall not be named but who has a rodent mascot. This organization just doesn't know when to let it go on copyright/trademark of its precious mouse.

At least in the USA, the Supreme Court said that copyright infringement isn't theft. Morally and ethically it is. However, you could say the same thing about when adapting a public domain work into a movie or TV show.

*Something that might often be overlooked is that there is a lot of original doujinshi. Making a work not based off of such materials means you that it could flop. That is, since you don't have something that is based off of an already successful work.
