Brilliant! I'll stick to scanlations until I can get to buy the manga.

Isn't this the manga that's super racist/bigot against pretty much all countries that are not Japanese? The anime toned it down a lot from what I remember

Sekai Project, I know this is your first manga release and all but please for the love of Rory don't skrew this up! I unfortunately just finished reading the first volume of Udon Entertainment's release of the Steins;Gate manga(which was one of their first manga series as well) and it was, to put it lightly, absolutely horrible.

For some reason reading this article made me reminiscence of Tokyopop in its latter years...

It has a decent amount of Japanese nationalism in the general sense, but it's pretty hamfisted, so I just roll my eyes. We've certainly done worse in Hollywood movies as far as painting whole countries certain ways, America F&CK YEAH! etc.

What I find interesting is how Alphapolis has been able to make an entire business model out of licensing only one genre niche. They go to Syosetu.com and sign the most popular "alternate universe/reincarnation" webnovel authors, then edit those for Light Novel release. Most of them also have some sort of low-budget manga adaptation associated with them, although GATE is actually one of the better drawn ones of the bunch.

(Compared to Konjiki Wordmaster, World Customize Creator, E? Heibon Desu Yo, etc. )

First, you can't be racist/bigot against a country. Second, I can't really see thinking of your country as better than everywhere else that much of an issue. I have a feeling that most americans would tell you that the US is the best.

I think the word you are really looking for is nationalism. However, unlike racism and bigotry, nationalism isn't inherently negative. For example, a synonym of nationalism is patriotism which has a pretty positive connotation. On the other hand, I'm not aware of any synonyms of racism or bigotry that are positive.

Yeah, like the whole 'our special forces make your special forces look like scrubs.' Don't even really think anything of that stuff after seeing the same from hollywood since forever.

Does anyone know if Sekai Project will be publishing this in print or digital only?

This has been my question the entire time.

Also yes I am sorry to burst peoples bubble but nationalism is not at all the same as racism or bigotry. Now if there are actual scenes where one is discriminatory based on their nationality or what not, that is racism. But going JAPAN F(&@ yay is not racist.

I think it's more about how all other countries are depicted as looking at the gate as something to exploit for profit and resources and are absolutely ruthless in their efforts while Japan is shown as having only the purest intentions and can be forgiven for just about anything they do. Don't get me wrong, Gate is one of the anime I most look forward to every week, but I find myself rolling my eyes pretty frequently, especially that last episode.

You know, art aside, I've not had much issue with the 2 volumes of the Steins;Gate manga that Udon has released. There have been some grammatical mistakes, but nothing that really took me out of the story. And I've seen people complain about Mayuri's "Toodaloo", but she might've said that once in the 2 volumes so far...?

And, I can't fault Udon for the art, seeing as they had no part in that. Laughing

Personally, I'm hoping Steins;Gate does good numbers for them, as I'm hoping they grab some of the other manga series, as I'm interested in reading those.

Also, is this really one of their first manga releases? I own Mega Man ZX volumes 1 and 2...which I bought in 2010...so, had they really not done anything else since then? I know they also have released Mega Man Gigamix and Megamix...but I'm unsure as to when those were released.

That's what I want to know. But, one could assume that it is in print...due to it being up for pre-order...?

I'd like to get this manga, if it is in print. But, I'm always concerned with manga adaptions of LNs and whether or not they are going to adapt the whole story.

Well, at least it seems like the anime will...Laughing

No, that is still not racist. Racism requires discrimination / prejudice against a race. A nationality is NOT a race.

Uh, I thought it was abundantly clear that the Japanese government also plans on exploiting the other side of the gate for profit. Not really that pure of an intention. Now sure, Itami has only the purest of intentions. I don't think you can extend that to Japan.

Okay, I am hopeful that this turns out well for the fans and Sekai Project. But, isn't this taking a bit too long? We are in the second season of the Anime now. Does anyone know if six months from announcement to pre-orders is a normal length of time? I would hate for them to miss the boat on this one.

Yeah, they're after resources, but they're also the ones that were invaded so they have a reason to expect something back and for the most part they've been very tactful in doing so. Even the Japanese Prime Minister shows remorse while the other world leaders act like bloodthirsty old men.

Not sure what your point is. You said before they had only the purest of intentions. I said that was wrong. Now you seem to be trying to counter with the other countries being worse, but that is irrelevant. The other countries being more bloodthirsty doesn't somehow make Japan's greed for resources, greed for the sole control of access to the other side, and desire to dominate the gate countries (granted not domination through force like it would seem other countries would prefer) the "purest of intentions." You seem to have agreed that part of their motivation was greed, and even just that is definitely not a pure intention.

Nope, I don't agree and I don't think greed is the word for it. Japan was invaded in an act of war. Civilians were killed in the streets and structures were destroyed. They have every right to a counterstrike and to be able to claim the empire's resources in exchange for their losses. They'll certainly continue to keep gathering their resources they've also been doing humanitarian work so as far as I'm concerned they haven't done anything wrong. The other countries have absolutely no reason to be on the other side and are willing to go so far as to covertly invade Japan and would likely just steamroll over the empire in an all out invasion. It's an unfair and unrealistic depiction of other countries while Japan is shown as the benevolent ones.
