That's sad he's too busy. It would probably be very fun to go to this.

I literally just finished Kingdom of Dreams and Madness about an hour ago, and based on that, I imagine the guy really is too busy. Apparently he seems to struggle with schedules. It's a shame though, as I love his work and think his perspective could be beneficial and much different than the standard member.

Well I don't blame him if your too busy and don't have the time on your hands that's fine although the Academy could have really gained a lot with Takahata. Confused

He wouldn't even have had to do anything or watch screeners to be part of it. Or vote as things were till now... Sigh.
I wonder if we will come back to them later. Veterans as him are what the academy needs.

Edit: Miyazaki is apparently still not an academy member despite being offered a chair multiple times. Hm.

Well, that's not gonna help non-mainstream films get more votes

The academy is in something of a state of flux, from what I've seen in the news lately they think they have too many Veterans and not enough new blood. So they've begun tinkering with the rules. I don't see where that will help them much though.

Wow, I didn't know that he even attended these events. I know Miyazaki does when he can, and I remember he did turn the events down for political reasons. Didn't know Isao Takahata went as well. But yeah, when you can't go you just can't go.

Damnit, man, they need you! If anyone could help nominate more diverse animation, it'd be Takahata. Just vote on the shorts at least, they don't take a lot of time to watch!

I don't think being a member of the Academy means some one *has* to attend the awards or vote on all eligible categories, but I suppose he's taking the responsibility very seriously if he feels he doesn't have time to become a member. Sad

And the last thing the Academy needs is another old man in its membership as they're already facing a lot of criticism from that.

It's not for nothing that Miyazaki said Takahata "is descended from tree sloths".

But yeah, he's taking the responsibilities of being a member much more seriously than we know some members do.

The joke this year is that an academy member said aloud that he voted for The Room (i great film i might add) because he heard that it was "the best" without seeing any of the nominees. Shocked
Thank god for the reforms and my further options are in the Oscar related Answerman column from last week.

I also agree that the animation section of the Oscars tends to be a bit of a travesty at times. They better reform till the cows come home till next February...

It isn't about age, but how much one has worked in the industry and how recently they've worked. Takahata has produced a feature film rather recently, and is incredibly relevant to the industry.

I find it bordering on offensive that just because they hired a 'diverse' Academy member, it means they will surely nominate more 'diversely'.

These members should be free to choose on their accord. Not used as some kind of political tools.

He isn't really "busy" he just probably doesn't want to be affiliated with any type of committee anymore since he's too old. If anyone saw the documentary, you'll know what I mean. I was so sad that the Tale of Princess Kaguya did not win best animated film last year because apparently lots of the academy members SKIPPED it so Big Hero 6 won by default. To me Big Hero 6 was so mediocre and lacked any true artistic values or visually stunning animation. Isao Takahata should've won because TOPK was the best princess film I witnessed in a decade. You see the hopes, dreams, growth, and spoiler[death] of a princess which no other studio has the "balls" to do. Kinda sad Miyazaki and Takahata's last film and final contribution to the industry will not be acknowledged by the academy or mainstream media.

Glad he declined. That'd just be giving credibility to a rotten organization. Like he wants to rub shoulders with people that didn't vote for his "Chinese cartoon shit." This decline of the invitation comes not too long after those interviews came out about what people voted for the animation categories, no? Who the hell wants to join an organization just to dance for other people who don't respect you?

My respect for him has increased.
