Nintendo Launches Miitomo Smartphone App on March 17 in Japan

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

Nintendo announced on Thursday that it will release its Miitomo smartphone app in Japan on March 17. Nintendo has also opened a website for the app in various languages. Those who pre-register for the app will get platinum points. The pre-registration deadline in Japan is March 16 at noon JST.

Nintendo also plans to release the app in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand.

Miitomo is Nintendo's first smartphone app, and it is a communication app that will use Mii characters. Players will create Mii avatars of themselves, and answer questions about themselves. The Mii will then share those answers with players' Friends' Miis. Players will only be able to communicate with their Friends' Miis, and Nintendo stated that "a Friend relationship can be established only between two people who know each other and have consented to the relationship."

Players Miis will automatically share answers to certain questions with their Friends. Nintendo calls this "friendly communication starters" so that players "who are less willing to send messages can easily participate." The goal is that users might be able to find out unknown or common aspects about their Friends.

Nintendo plans to launch approximately five smart device titles by the end of March 2017.
