Director Tabata: Final Fantasy XV 'Achieves' 6.5 Million Units Worldwide

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata revealed during an interview with GameSpot on Saturday that Final Fantasy XV has "achieved over 6.5 million units" worldwide. Tabata didn't specify if the number is combined digital sales and shipments (as with previous milestone announcements for the game) or another metric.

Tabata also stated that he has seen Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game, and stated that his team's goal for its next project is to "take that experience that players felt with Breath of the Wild, but with our own technology and our own knowhow." Tabata didn't confirm if this next project would be for the Final Fantasy series, or another project.

Final Fantasy XV had sold an estimated 1,000,712 copies in Japan as of September 3. The number does not include digital download purchases.

Tabata stated that the game broke even with development costs on "day one." As of January 10, the game had sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. The number includes physical shipments and download sales.

Final Fantasy XV went on sale worldwide for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One last November.
