Episode 2 contains a cameo by Kuro and Sen from original creator Satoko Kiyuduki's first manga Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro. This occurs at the 17:17 mark, roughly three quarters of the way through the episode.
Kisaragi Yamaguchi's glasses are also inspired by Kuro, from Satako Kiyuduki's other manga Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro . Both wear them so that they hang well below her eyes, and the style is identical.
In the opening, the black pencils that appear in the top displays the word "Stackler" which is a parody of the trademark "Staedtler"
In the first set of ending songs, a pair out shaded characters quickly appear, one after the other, at either side of Kyoujou. These are also characters from Kiyuduki's "Shoulder-A-Coffin Kuro". These are Nijuku and Sanju, both of whom were with Kuro on her journey.
In episode 3, at around 05:20, on the back of the magazine Noda is reading, the letters G.A. are part of a multicoloured circular symbol, which is a reference to Suzumiya Haruhi's SOS-Brigade (the design for both logos is the same).
