Galaxy Express 999 – another series by Leiji Matsumoto, this is also the train that Manabu's brother boards as he leaves to join the SDF.

According to an interview with Matsumoto on volume 1 of the DVDs, Manabu Yuuki is the younger brother of Kei Yuuki, a woman who flew with Captain Harlock on the Arcadia. However, this is never touched upon in the actual anime.

In Episode 16, Comrade, the joker in the deck of cards is Captain Harlock, one of the characters from Matsumoto's universe.
