The series title is in English to cover a pun: the Japanese word for "wizardry", of the kind practiced by Ichinomiya Kantarou, is "senjutsu" (仙術). The homonymous "senjutsu" (戦術) means "tactics". In fact, it could be argued that there is a third pun in Kantarou's writing career: "senjutsu" (撰述) means "compiling, editing, writing".

The episode 18 "backwards" sign is actually an older way to display Japanese horizontally, especially on storefront signs. Before Western customs were adopted by the Japanese, the text was written vertically, proceeding right-to-left (to this day, nearly all Japanese books open from the right cover). If a sign needed to be written horizontally, chances are, it would be written from right to left, for this reason. The left-to-right, horizontal Western writing style didn't emerge until the time of Emperor Meiji's educational reforms in the 19th century (about the time frame of Tactics).

Youko's name is written 妖狐, using the kanji for "monster" (妖怪 = Youkai) and for "fox" (狐= Kitsune). Hence her complaint about Kantarou's unimaginative naming skills.

The "Doujigiri Yasutsuna" (童子切安綱) is a real sword, one of the "Five Great Swords of the Realm" (天下五剣). It is currently exhibited at the Tokyo National Museum.

even though tactics is not a shonen-ai anime, i.e. kantaro x haruka, many fans believe it should be, and so do the creators. Sakura Kinoshita and Kazuko Higashiyama co-creators of tactics, have created three doujinshi versions of tactics, two hardcore yaoi doujins, one kantaro x haruka, and one raiko x haruka, as well as a softcore doujin that is kantaro x haruka as well

In the English dubbed version, an American voice actor mispronounces Viscount, a character’s title of nobility. The American voice actor playing Kantarou Ichinomiya pronounces the title of nobility, Viscount, as vis-count. However, the “s” is actually silent, making the proper pronunciation of the title of nobility, Viscount, vi-count, not vis-count.

In episode 18, the name of of the Mystery Society (摩訶不思議研究会) is displayed backwards (right-to-left), appearing as 会究研議思不訶摩 on their sign.
