Trivia:

The book references the mythical Tower of Babel from the Hebrew Bible with a miniature replica that pops up from its pages.

The bus features a poster that states "el libro de los seres imaginarios" in mirror image, which means "Book of Imaginary Beings" in Spanish. A 1957 book later published under the title "El libro de los seres imaginarios" was written by Jorge Luis Borges with Margarita Guerrero. The book contains descriptions of over 100 mythical beasts from folklore and literature.

The children encounter an aspidochelone, or "fastitocalon" from the "Encyclopedia of Mythical Animals" as mentioned in the credits. The aspidochelone is a fabled sea creature that resembles a giant whale or giant sea turtle that sailors mistake for an island. When sailors land on the "island", the aspidochelone will submerge back into the ocean and drown its passengers.

Won 1st prize in Adult Jury for Animation at 1998 Chicago International Children's Film Festival.
