Macross City is reconstructed aboard the SDF-1 and its citizens, including Rick Hunter and Minmei, try to resume their lives. But their attempts are disrupted as Captain Gloval discovers how to transform SDF-1 into its awesome robotic configuration - just in time to do battle with the approaching Zentraedi Armada. The Earthlings repel the enemy, but again must recover from massive damage. Rick has resisted becoming a Veritech combat pilot, but soon he has no choice: the Zentraedi attack again and rick and the Robotech forces see furious action. Desperate, Gloval attempts a blitzkrieg maneuver against the alien warriors and the battle rages through the rings of Saturn.

Breetai, commander of the Zentraedi forces, takes steps to capture SDF-1: he sets a trap for the ship and calls for help from the ruthless warlord Khyron. When the Robotech fortress visits Mars to investigate the fate of Sara observation base, gravity mines hold the ship and Khyron attacks.

Lisa Hayes, exploring the destroyed base, attempts a daring plan to explode the gravity mines. The plan succeeds, but Lisa avoids death only though Rick Hunter's last minute rescue.

Saved for the moment, SDF-1 orbits Mars. Aboard, Minmei prepares a party for the sixteenth birthday. But the celebration is interrupted when Khyron launches another furious attack on the wounded ship.
