To boost motale while they struggle with the aliens, Macross City holds a beauty contest and Minmei is named Miss Macross. Watching the broadcast, the Zentraedi are mystified. In their culture the sexes to no mingle or indulge in musicl dance or fashion. Seeking to discover more, the Zentraedi commander Breetai dispatches a reconnaissance squad - which is all but destroyed by Rick Hunter. Khyron again attacks SDF-1 and succeeds in knocking out the ship's radar. As Captain Gloval reuses an ultimatum to surrender, Lisa Hayes mounts a dangerous mission to pilot a radar ship into Zentraedi-controlled space under the protection of Rick Hunter's Vermillion Squad.

Captured while on their mission, Lisa, Rick and Ben are taken to the Zentraedi flagship and questioned by Dolza, the supreme commander. The giant aliens are mystified by the earthlings customs and shocked to observe Rick and Lisa kissing. They are convinced that SDF-1 holds the secret to protoculture, the substance that allowed their race to develop, and plan to infiltrate the ship with spies.

When Lisa, Rick and Ben initiate a plan to escape, they discover that their guard is Max Sterling in disguise. He has come to rescue his friends and, despite a perilous pursuit by the Zentraedi, they succeed in returning to SDF-1.
