Rick Hunter, seriously wounded in an incredible aerial dogfight, is in the hospital. While his body fights for life, his delirious mind travels through a phantasmagoric dreamscape where both Lynn Minmei and Lisa Hayes make appearances. While Rick recovers, Roy Fokker's squadron follows him into the ship itself, intent on destroying him. Their battle wreaks havoc on the city, but finally she falls. In the raging battle, Roy is wonded. At first, the wound doesn't seem serious, but later that night, Roy dies. It is up to Lisa Hayes to tell Rick that his "big brother" is gone.

While the civilian population of SDF-1 shrinking due to the catastrophes of war, Captain Gloval is desperate to relocate the survivors to Earth. His broadcast appeal is responded to by the North American Ontario quadrant, but before Gloval can land the refugees, Khyron attacks again. In the face of the Zentraedi offensive, Gloval tries a new barrier-shield system. It protects the ship, but with drastic results: a system overload leads to a chain reaction which destroys part of the Veritech squad and a 25-mile area of Earth.

The Earth Government lays down the law - the battle fortress is dangerous, and must not come near the planet.
