Astronaut/Yamato Fan Noguchi Plays Himself in Space Brothers

posted on by Ko Ransom
Anime rendering of Sōichi Noguchi to appear in episode 13 on June 24

On Friday, astronaut Sōichi Noguchi recorded lines of dialogue for a guest role as himself in the 13th episode of the anime adaptation of Chūya Koyama's Space Brothers manga. In the episode, Mutta, one of the story's protagonists, recalls a talk by Noguchi on "the three-dimensional ant," a concept that Koyama first heard from Noguchi when he visited NASA's Johnson Space Center as part of his research. This marks Noguchi's first experience as a voice actor, and unlike most voice acting in anime, Noguchi's voice was recorded prior to animating his character.

In 2010, the Japanese space agency JAXA posted a photograph of Noguchi on the International Space Station wearing the signature red-arrow-on-white shirt of Susumu Kodai, the main character of the classic anime Space Battleship Yamato. According to JAXA, Noguchi was a fan of Yamato as a child.
