Yuri on Ice!! Could Take TAAF Awards for 2nd Year

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Readers who found the loophole that allowed Yuri!!! on Ice to possibly win Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2018 (TAAF) after taking two categories this year will be disappointed to find out the voting results.

TAAF closed voting on Sunday, narrowing down this year's anime series offerings to 100 and films to 10 choices. These choices were decided by fan vote via Twitter, and then will be up for vote again in the fan selection categories in mid-January. The series and films will also be up for consideration by the event's judges. The votes from this round will not transfer over.

Taking the top choice by a large margin is Yuri!!! on Ice, an anime that technically premiered before the cut-off but continued airing into the applicable window, thus being up to win again. In second place is the recent season's The Idolm@ster SideM, followed by the smash-hit Kemono Friends, Land of the Lustrous, and Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Princess Principal, Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters, Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond, and Made in Abyss.

The film category has its own rule-bending shake-up. Coming in at #10 is the live-action Gintama film. The poll notes that it includes both the live-action film itself and the new television anime announcement. It's possible that the film was able to be included in the Tokyo Anime Award Festival selection despite being live-action because it included animation with the new anime arc announcement.

The number one film according to votes is Free! -Timeless Medley- Kizuna followed by Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel I. presage flower, Free! -Timeless Medley- Yakusoku, In This Corner of the World, King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO, Gekijōban Kuroko no Basuke Last Game, Zunda Horizon, Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter, and Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale.
