Director Shinichiro Watanabe Explains Musical Choices in Carole & Tuesday Anime

At a Carole & Tuesday production presentation released on the anime's official YouTube channel on February 27, director Shinichiro Watanabe shared the story behind the anime's production.

The pitching process began roughly five years ago around the production of Space Dandy, which was also made at Bones. When Bones president Masahiro Minami realized that music would play a heavy part in Watanabe's proposed story, he asked for the assistance of record label FlyingDog, which helped Watanabe seek out the musical talent needed. A worldwide audition was held for the singing voices of the two main characters, and Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann were chosen for the roles.

Watanabe explained that he held a worldwide audition because he believes that music can connect people across all nationalities. He also felt that songs with Japanese lyrics would go against the theme of the anime if only Japanese people could understand them, so he wanted to use English songs. Also, because the story itself had a global theme, it naturally led to the involvement of more composers around the world.

At the end of the presentation, Watanabe said, "I rarely ever say this, but I have confidence in this anime, so please look forward to it."

Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann also came onstage to share their thoughts on their involvement in the project. Nai Br.XX said, "It's a pretty awesome experience. I'm just glad I got the opportunity to sing for Carole and go through the recording process and see it come alive with the animation. It's just a beautiful thing. I'm so happy to get the chance to do it."

Ann said, "I'm so happy I got to participate. As a singer-songwriter myself, the theme of the anime really spoke to me. I'm really looking forward to seeing the world through this girl and being able to sing through her as well." Speaking in Japanese, she said that she was born and raised in Japan, and that she is half-Japanese, half-American.

The two singers performed the opening theme "Kiss Me" (written and composed by Nulbarich) live. Like her character in the anime, Ann played the guitar while singing.

The video will only be online for a week, so don't miss your chance to watch these two talented women perform.
