Tokyo International Film Festival Unveils Anime Lineup (Updated)

posted on by Mikhail Koulikov

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced the titles that will screen in its October 20-27 animecs TIFF program, which consists of premieres and feature showings of the latest anime projects from leading Japanese studios.

The anime company Production I.G will use animecs to introduce its two 20th anniversary projects: the modern romance OVA Tokyo Marble Chocolate, and the first episode of Masamune Shirow's Ghost Hound television series about surreal parallel worlds. The Studio Madhouse will also showcase an adaptation of Sin-ichi Hiromoto's dark fantasy manga Hells Angels at the festival.

The other titles on the schedule include Yasuomi Umetsu's controversial Kite: Liberator video sequel, the premiere of the Moyashimon (Tales of Agriculture) television series about a student who sees germs as super-deformed characters, and "Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor" short from Academy-Award-nominated director Koji Yamamura. "A Country Doctor" will be screened along with four other short that Yamamura previously created, including 2002's "Mt. Head," "The Old Crocodile," "A Child's Metaphysics," and "Man and Whale."

Several anime works such as Ghost in the Shell, Katsuhiro Ōtomo's Memories, and Macross Plus Movie Edition had their world premieres or Tokyo premieres, complete with English subtitles, at the Tokyo International Fantastic Film Festival, a now defunct event once attached to TIFF. However, none of the screenings at animecs will include English subtitles. Showtimes and trailers for all of the animecs screenings are available on the animecs TIFF 2007 website.
