Lucky Star Sketch Auctioned for 1.311 Million Yen (Update 2)

posted on by Egan Loo
D.C./ef/sola designer Naru Nanao drew Kagami sketch that went for US$14,100

Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: An auction for a sketch of a Lucky Star character by the popular game illustrator Naru Nanao ended on Sunday evening at 1,311,000 yen (about US$14,000). Nanao had originally drawn the sketch of the Kagami Hiiragi character to mark the end of the Lucky Star anime series, even though Nanao was not directly involved in Lucky Star. The sketch had been given away for free in a random drawing among readers of the December 2007 issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Comptiq magazine. Three bidders all entered bids of 1,285,000 yen (US$13,770) or higher in the last ten minutes of the July 12 auction on the Yahoo! Japan website.

Nanao is best known as the illustrator or original character designer of the D.C. ~Da Capo~, Canvas 2 - Niji Iro no Sketch, ef - a fairy tale of the two., and sola games or multimedia projects — all of which inspired anime spinoffs. Comptiq has serialized both Kagami Yoshimizu's original Lucky Star manga and the manga version of the D.C. II: Da Capo II game.

Update: The sola multimedia project had no games made. Thanks, EvilEmperor.

Update 2: A sketch of the Kimagure Orange Road character Madoka Ayukawa by character designer Akemi Takada went for US$16,000 at the Anime Expo 2000 charity auction in Anaheim, California. Thanks, LordRobin.
