posted on by Egan Loo
Manga creator Akino Kondoh will hold a talk in New York City on April 21 with Ryan Holmberg, the curator of the "Garo Manga, 1964-1973" exhibition at The Center for Book Arts. Kondoh is one of the contributors to AX, Seirinkogeisha's ongoing anthology magazine for alternative manga, and Top Shelf is publishing a 400-page compilation of stories from AX in English in North America. AX was heavily influenced by the earlier Garo journal.
The "Garo Manga, 1964-1973" exhibition will showcase all 120 issues from the groundbreaking manga journal, as well as materials from similar publications before and after Garo. The exhibition will run from today to June 26, and the opening reception will be held tonight. Holmberg is a Mellon Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in Contemporary Art at the University of Southern California.
