Jules Urbach Speaks About Proposed Gaiking CG Film

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

The Hollywood Reporter newspaper's Heat Vision blog has posted an interview with Light Stage developer Jules Urbach regarding the proposed computer-graphics remake of Toei's Gaiking anime series. Urbach had developed the pilot that premiered at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in March. In the interview, Urbach said that the movie was currently in the pre-production stage, and added that a script should be finished in the next three months. Urbach confirmed that the movie has a potential 2012 release date, but added that the date was not set, and that it could be 2013 instead.

In the interview, Urbach also discussed how he came to work on Gaiking, the potential inaccessibility of the title, how Gaiking will differ from other giant-robot film adaptations such as Transformers and Voltron, and the appeal of the giant-robot genre.

Toei Animation announced in March that Light Stage, one of the production tools used on the computer graphics for James Cameron's Avatar film, was used to create the pilot for the film. Toei plans to release the film, along with a CG remake of Leiji Matsumoto and Toei's Space Pirate Captain Harlock manga and anime franchise, in theaters in Europe, North America, Asia, and elsewhere.
