Laputa, Conan, Summer Wars Vie for Japan's BD Prizes

posted on by Egan Loo
Laputa nominated for video quality; Detective Conan, Summer Wars for interactivity

The Digital Entertainment Group Japan (DEG Japan) announced the nominees of the 3rd annual DEG Japan Awards/Blu-ray Prizes on Friday. The awards honor the past year's Blu-ray Disc releases in Japan that best utilize the format's features in video, audio, and other aspects.

In the Best Video Quality in Film category, Walt Disney Japan's release of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Laputa: Castle in the Sky is competing with the extended edition of James Cameron's Avatar and Christopher Nolan's Inception. Miyazaki's Ponyo film won the top award, the Grand Prix, last year. Like Ponyo, Laputa's Blu-ray release allows viewers to watch the film and its storyboards simultaneously via the picture-in-picture feature.

In the Best Interactivity category, Being's release of Yasuichiro Yamamoto's Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in The Sky and VAP's release of Mamoru Hosoda's Summer Wars earned nominations along with the Alien Anthology. Similar to Laputa and Ponyo, the Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in The Sky Blu-ray includes the ability to watch the film along with a synchronized video of its storyboards via BD-Live. The Summer Wars Blu-ray enhances the user's viewing experience with a "Summer Wars Navi" guide feature with BD-Java.
