Animated Film Tatsumi on Manga Creator at BFI Southbank, November 27

The BFI Southbank in London will screen the animated film Tatsumi on Sunday November 27 at 3.50 p.m. The screening can be booked here, tickets £9.50, concessions available. While Tatsumi was made in Singapore, it is about the pioneering manga artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi, who wrote adult ("gekiga") stories in strip form. Directed by Eric Khoo, the film adapts five of Tatsumi's manga stories, threaded together with Tatsumi's account of his struggle to make a living after World War II. (The autobiographical material comes from Tatsumi's manga, A Drifting Life.)
The film was screened at this year's Cannes Film Festival in May, and at the Tokyo International Film Festival at the end of October. According to the Film Distributor's Association website, it will have a U.K. cinema release on January 13 2012. The BFI Southbank screening is part of the BFI's onedotzero festival in November.
The festival also includes j-star 11, an anthology which brings together "some of the most surprising and inspiring music videos, motion graphics and animated shorts" from Japan. The j-star 11 screening on November 25 is booked out, but screenings on the 26 (8.30 p.m.) and 27 (6.10 p.m.) can be booked here. As with the Tatsumi screening, tickets are £9.50, with concessions available.
