Manga Creator/Instructor Jun Hatanaka Passes Away

Erotic comedy Mandaraya no Ryouta inspired live-action show & film, video anime

Manga creator Jun Hatanaka passed away at 1:05 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13 due to an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was 62.

Hatanaka was born on March 20, 1950, and he made his professional debut with "Tsukiyo" in 1977. He launched his most well known work, the erotic comedy Mandaraya no Ryouta, in Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha's Weekly Manga Sunday magazine in 1979.

Hatanaka received an award of excellence from the Japan Cartoonists Association (Nihon Manga Kakyōkai) in 1981 for Mandaraya no Ryouta. This same manga inspired a live-action television series, a live-action film, and an original video anime (pictured right). Not only did Hatanaka draw manga, but he was also a woodblock artist and an instructor in Tokyo Polytechnic University's Department of Manga.

The date for Hatanaka's services has been not been set. He is survived by his son Gen.
