Winners to be announced at Small Press Expo in Maryland in September

America's Small Press Expo has announced the nominations for the 16th annual Ignatz Awards on Monday. Jiro Taniguchi's A Zoo in Winter manga is nominated for Outstanding Graphic Novel.

The Ignatz Awards, which are named after the character in George Herriman's seminal comic Krazy Kat, recognize "outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning." A jury of cartoonists create a ballot every year, and then the attendees of Small Press Expo vote on the nominees. The winners will be announced at Bethesda, Maryland event on September 15.

In 2009, Hideo Azuma became the first creator from Japan to be honored with an Ignatz Award nomination for his autobiographical Disappearance Diary manga. In 2010, Susumu Katsumata's Red Snow manga and Baku Yumemakura and Jiro Taniguchi's The Summit of the Gods were nominated for Ignatz Awards.

Fanfare and Ponent Mon released Taniguchi's one-volume A Zoo in Winter manga last June. The manga revolves around a young man working at a textiles factory who wishes to become an artist. After an incident at a nearby zoo, he moves to Tokyo and tries to get work as an assistant to a famous manga creator.
