The Academy Opens Foreign Film Votes to All Members

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a rule change on Saturday that allows all members to vote in all 24 categories, including foreign language films. Prior to the rule change, members had to attend special screenings to vote in either foreign language or documentary shorts. Voters will now be able to weigh in after viewing material in a theater or on DVD.

The move is considered controversial by some. Sony Pictures Classics Co-President Tom Bernard stated he was opposed to the change, citing that voting in the category should only be open to members who are really passionately involved in foreign film.

Last year's foreign film nominees included Amour, Kon-Tiki, No, A Royal Affair, and War Witch. No Japanese or anime films were nominated.
