Japan Box Office Attendance Up, Sales Down in 2013

The Hollywood Reporter website reported on Tuesday that while movie theater attendance was up 0.5 percent in Japan last year, overall sales dropped 0.5 percent. Box office totals for the year were 194 billion yen (about US$1.88 billion) and about 156 million attendees filled theater seats.

Hollywood films increased its presence in Japan with a 8 percent raise for a market share of 39 percent according to statistics from the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (MPPAJ). 2013 was also the first year to feature over 1,000 films in Japan with a total of 1,117 movies released. The number includes 591 Japanese movies and 526 foreign titles.

Oricon released the top 10 films at the Japanese box office for 2013 in December. Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises ranked as the top-grossing film.
