AiCon 2014: Secret Agents on in Hobart this Weekend!

posted on by Jon Hayward
This weekend AiCon, Tasmania's anime convention will take over the Wrest Point Conference Centre from Saturday the 8th to Sunday the 9th of March;

Anime Island Convention (AICon) is Tasmania's longest running pop culture convention. This year the event will be taking over a new venue, the Wrest Point Conference Centre (it's attached to Hobart's casino!) for the weekend as last year AiCon outgrew their previous venue.

AiCon's primary focus is on the Japanese anime and manga industry but it also spends plenty of time on Cosplay events, theatre sports and a artistic focus unique to AICon.

  • Where: Wrest Point Conference Centre, 410 Sandy Bay Rd, Sandy Bay TAS 7005.
  • When: Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of March, 2014. 9:30am to 6:30pm Saturday, 9:30am to 6:00pm Sunday.
  • Cost: $25 per day at the door. Children 10-15 y/o $20 per day, Under 10's free when accompanied by a paying adult.

So you're wondering what will be fun at AiCon? Here's some of our highlights;

  • Saturday
    • 10:30am - Thank Kami You're Here: Basically the AiCon variant on "Thank God You're Here" where two teams battle it out in theatre sports. Tasman Room.
    • 12:30pm - Welcome to the Nasuverse!: An examination of Kinoko Nasu's works including Fate/stay night and Tsukihime. Plenary Hall.
    • 4:30pm - Tournament of Win: A game show where the points are made up and somehow do matter. Tasman Room.
    • 5:30pm - Hanabee Showcase: While there will not be any announcements, watching some Hanabee titles will always be an enjoyable way to spend time. Plenary Hall.
  • Sunday
    • 11:00am - Cosplay Competition: You know the drill, but it's more entertaining with a Tasmanian spin. Tasman Room.
    • 2:00pm - Tentacles and Mechs: It's Spicks and Specks but with anime and manga questions.
    • 4:00pm - Gamma.Con Applied Nerdlinger Exam: A quiz where you play off against the organisers of Canberra's Gamma.Con. Plenary Hall.
