One Piece Manga Takes 2-Week Break Due to Creator's Tonsil Operation

Eiichiro Oda to remove tonsils after infection caused earlier 2-week hiatus

The official website for Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine announced on Wednesday that Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga will be going on hiatus for two issues. The magazine's editors explained that the manga creator is undergoing an operation to remove his tonsils. One Piece will not run in this year's 28th and 29th issues, which will ship on June 9 and June 16. The manga is expected to return in the 30th issue on June 23.

Oda drew a sketch that reads:

Luffy: Sorry. Wait just a little bit!!

Oda said, "Since last year, I've tended to get swollen tonsils when I get tired. The surgery I'm having this time will take out the tonsils, which really hindered my work." He joked, "Since I'm having this surgery anyways, I plan to have a bazooka installed on my shoulder." He added, "I'll be back with my body stronger, so I can clear my workload in the latter half of this year. I'll be right back, so please come play with me again."

The manga went on an earlier two-week hiatus when Oda was hospitalized last year for peritonsillar abscess (a complication due to an infection frequently caused by tonsillitis).

The manga's 74th book volume will ship on June 4 with an initial print run of 4 million copies. It is the 11th volume in a row to have a first printing of four million or higher.
