Light novel-based anime follows boy who partners with beautiful girl at magic combat school

FUNimation Entertainment announced on Friday that it will stream the anime of Takumi Hiiragi-Boshi's Absolute Duo light novel series.

The series will premiere on January 4 on AT-X and run for 12 episodes. Funimation will announce when it will stream the anime later.

Funimation describes the story:

In a world of heroes who wield magical weapons known as Blaze, Thor Kokonoe's manifests instead as a shield. Things aren't all bad for Thor, though: he's enrolled in an elite school that pairs students up into Duos, and his own partner is the beautiful Julie Sigtuna, a silver-haired exchange student who wields a wicked pair of blades. Along with a bevy of Blazing beauties, Thor's high school adventures are just beginning!

Atsushi Nakayama (A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives, Is This a Zombie? episode director) is directing the anime at 8-Bit (Infinite Stratos, Grisaia no Kajitsu) with the series scripts supervised by Takamitsu Kouno (Minami-ke Tadaima, Kyo no Gononi). Keiichi Sano (Heaven's Memo Pad, Strike the Blood) is designing the characters for the series, and is also serving as animation director along with Norie Tanaka (M3 the dark metal chief animation director, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic episode animation director).

The cast includes:

Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Thor Kokonoe

Nozomi Yamamoto as Julie Sigtuna

Ayaka Suwa as Tomoe Tachibana

Ayaka Imamura as Miyabi Hotaka

Haruka Yamazaki as Lilith Bristol

Hiiragi-Boshi launched the light novel series with art by Yū Asaba in 2012, and Media Factory's MF Bunko published the sixth volume in July. Shinichirō Nariie launched a manga adaptation in Media Factory's Monthly Comic Alive magazine in 2013, and another spinoff manga series is serializing in Monthly Comic Alive.
