Tokyo Ghoul Horror Manga Gets Stage Play

Adaptation of Sui Ishida's series to run in Tokyo, Kyoto

This year's 17th issue of Sheisha's Weekly Young Jump magazine is announcing on Thursday that Sui Ishida's Tokyo Ghoul manga is inspiring a stage play adaptation. The play will run in Tokyo and Kyoto. The magazine will publish more details about the production in the future.

Ishida launched Tokyo Ghoul in Weekly Young Jump in 2011, and Shueisha shipped the 14th and final compiled volume this past October. The series has more than 12 million copies in circulation. Viz plans to release the manga's first compiled volume in North America in June.

The manga's story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious "ghouls" who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight.

Ishida launched the Tokyo Ghoul:re manga with a different main character in December.

The second television anime season inspired by Ishida's original manga premiered in Japan on January 8. Ishida was credited with creating the original manga for the first season, but Ishida is also credited with the original story concept for the second season.

Funimation is streaming an English Broadcast Dub of the anime as it airs in Japan. The North American anime distributor also streamed the first series as it aired in Japan last summer.
