Mad Max Creator Updates on Proposed Spinoff 'Anime'

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

Mad Max franchise screenwriter/director George Miller noted to Indiewire's The Playlist blog on Thursday that he had originally planned to create an "anime" film titled Mad Max: Furiosa alongside the next live-action film in the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road. Miller said the proposed anime film was delayed "a second time when we were rained out of Australia. But because we were delayed that didn't happen, and so we've got that script."

Miller additionally told the stuff.co.nz site that he had originally come up with the script for the proposed "Japanese-style anime" film with co-writer Nico Lathouris. Miller told the site that the film script "has been held back as a live-action movie."

Miller in 2009 had described the fourth film in the franchise as an "anime" in a proposal. The fourth film was written and planned for filming in 2003, until the project was cancelled when financing fell through due to the Iraq War.

The actual fourth film in the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road, is a live-action film that will open in the U.S. on May 15. Filming began for the movie in 2012. Charlize Theron (pictured above right) plays the character Furiosa in the film.

No further plans for future movies, live-action or otherwise, have been officially announced.
