The DVD of the Yōkai Watch: Tanjō no Himitsu da Nyan! anime film debuted in the #1 spot in Oricon's weekly anime DVD chart for the July 6-12 week, selling around 85,000 copies in its first week, making it the currently highest selling anime DVD of 2015. It also debuted in the #1 spot in the overall DVD chart.

The film's Blu-ray also released on the same day. The disc also debuted in the #1 spot in Oricon's weekly anime Blu-ray chart for the July 6-12 week, selling around 14,000 copies. It also debuted in the #2 spot in the overall Blu-ray chart.

Both the DVD and Blu-ray of the film went released in Japan on July 8.

The film is based on game developer Level-5's Yōkai Watch franchise. Level 5 announced the Yōkai Watch franchise in 2011 with a game, manga, and anime already planned. The franchise's first game for the Nintendo 3DS debuted in Japan in July 2013, and two versions of the Yo-kai Watch 2 3DS game shipped in July 2014. Yo-kai Watch 3 will debut in Japan in summer 2016, with a new USA setting. The television anime premiered this in January 2014.

The film's story revolves around Keita when he returns to his grandmother's village to discover clues behind his missing Yōkai Watch which allows him to see supernatural creatures — both good and evil — that he could not see before in everyday life. The search sends Keita back in time 60 years to save his grandfather, Keizo.

The film premiered in Japan last December 20.
