Voices of a Distant Star Novel Gets Indonesian Release on April 25

Novel based on Makoto Shinkai's short anime film

Indonesian publisher Katalis Pustaka announced last month that it has licensed Waku Ōba's novel adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi no Koe) short anime film. The publisher will release the novel on April 25, and it is currently taking preorders.

The original short film centers on the high school girl Mikako, and her friend Noboru. While the two continue to grow close, their relationship is cut short when Mikako is recruited as a pilot in an interstellar war against an enigmatic alien race. Although both continue to send messages to each other, the war pulls Mikako further and further away from Earth and Noboru. The relativistic distance between them results in Mikako remaining a young girl while Noboru continues to grow into an adult.

Shinkai produced the film as a solo project, and released it in 2002. The novel adaptation by Ōba was released later in the same year, featuring illustrations by Shinkai and Kou Yaginuma (Twin Spica).
