Belladonna Screening at Edinburgh Film Festival

The Edinburgh Film Festival will screen Eiichi Yamamoto's 1973 experimental anime film Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi no Belladonna) on June 24 at 11.30 p.m. The screening will be at Edinburgh's Filmhouse, in association with Scotland Loves Anime. Tickets will be on general sale from Friday May 27.
(The festival also includes screenings of two live-action manga adaptations: Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance and Golgo 13 - see below.)
The film follows Jeanne (Katsutaka Ito) after she is assaulted by a local lord on her wedding night. Vowing revenge, she makes a deal with the Devil (Tatsuya Nakadai). The Devil transforms Jeanne into a black-robed manifestation of her madness and desire.
Osamu Tezuka produced the film, and his long-time creative partner Eiichi Yamamoto (Star Blazers scriptwriter, Astro Boy: Hero of Space) wrote and directed the film at Mushi Productions. Masahiko Satoh (Grave of the Fireflies, The Fantastic Adventures of Unico) composed the film's soundtrack.
The film is being screened by Cinelicious Pics in the U.S,, which streamed a red-band trailer, not safe for work.
The Edinburgh Film Festival will also include screenings of two live-action manga adaptations, both at the Filmhouse:
Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance screening at 11.40 p.m. on June 19.
Golgo 13 (1973 live-action version) screening at 9 p.m. on June 20.
