King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO Anime Film Revealed For June 2017

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

The staff of the KING OF PRISM by PrettyRhythm anime film announced at the "Over The Rainbow SPECIAL THANKS PARTY!" event in Tokyo on Sunday that a new anime film titled King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO will open in Japan in June 2017.

The KING OF PRISM by PrettyRhythm film premiered in Japan on January 9, and was a spinoff of the Pretty Rhythm franchise that centered on the boys unit "Over the Rainbow." Masakazu Hishida (various Pretty Rhythm TV anime series) directed the film at Tatsunoko Production with a script by Jou Aoba (Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream storyboard). Yoshihiro Otobe (Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live) served as the CG director, and Mai Matsuura (Pretty Rhythm All Star Selection) was credited with the original character plan and design.

The film initially launched in 14 theaters, but after its popularity spread the film eventually opened in more than 130 theaters, selling approximately 460,000 tickets and earning approximately 800 million yen (about US$7.8 million). The film also received 4DX screenings alongside conventional screenings in June.

The film's Japanese Blu-ray Disc and DVD shipped on June 17 with a new short anime, and the releases ranked at #1 for both Oricon's weekly animation DVD and Blu-ray Disc rankings in their first week.

Toy maker Takara Tomy and game developer syn Sophia launched the Pretty Rhythm franchise with the 2010 arcade game Pretty Rhythm Mini-Skirt. The arcade games are targeted toward elementary school girls. The stories center around aspiring idols who compete in Prism Shows, a new kind of event that combines skating, dancing, singing, and fashion. The franchise has inspired four TV anime series, three anime films, and the PriPara successor franchise.
