Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress Gets New Anime in 2018

Comes after 2 compilation films, drama CD epilogue to original TV series

Fuji TV's live-streamed Noitamina Project Unveiling event announced on Thursday that production on a new Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress work has been green-lit. Tetsuro Araki, the director of the original television anime, confirmed that the new work is animated. The event also noted that this year's television series will be followed by two compilation films, as well as a drama CD that tells a story after the television series.

The "steampunk survival action" story takes place on the island country Hinomoto, where humans hide themselves in fortresses called stations against the threat of zombie-like beings with steel hearts known as "Kabane." Only armored locomotives known as "Hayajiro" go between the stations.

The original television anime premiered on April 7 and ended on July 1. The second episode was delayed due to special news coverage of the Kumamoto earthquake on April 15. The series' broadcast resumed one week later with the second episode.

The anime reunited director Tetsuro Araki and Wit Studio, the team responsible for Attack on Titan. Code Geass creator Ichiro Okouchi wrote the scripts. Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross 7, Gunbuster) designed the original characters, and Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan, Aldnoah.Zero) composed the music.

The series streamed on Amazon Prime Video worldwide in countries that have the service. Crunchyroll announced plans to release the series on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in North America with an English dub, and Funimation is now handling the release as part of the two companies' partnership.
