Frontwing's Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Game Gets TV Anime

3rd volume in game gets worldwide release on July 28

Frontwing announced on Saturday that its Grisaia: Phantom Trigger game is getting a television anime adaptation. Frontwing had teased earlier this week that it would make an "important announcement" for the game at an event on Saturday in Akihabara to commemorate the upcoming release of the game's "volume 3" on July 28.

Frontwing has opened a teaser website for the anime, featuring a key visual.

Akio Watanabe, the original character designer for the Grisaia franchise, is serving as the anime's character designer and chief animation director. Ryuichiro Yamakawa is producing the anime.

Frontwing began streaming the opening movie on Friday for volume 3 of the game.

Grisaia: Phantom Trigger introduces new characters. Frontwing describes the story of the first volume as follows:

Following the Heath Oslo incident, the existence of the US-Japanese anti-terror organization CIRS has become a matter of public knowledge. CIRS has been rebuilt from the ground up, and its most covert functions spun off to a new agency: SORD (Social Ops, Research & Development).

The goal of SORD is to train a new generation of operatives to defend the country against future threats. To that end, the organization has established a series of schools up and down the country. Mihama Academy, more-or-less left to rot after its abrupt closure, has been given new purpose as one such 'specialist training school'.

This new incarnation of Mihama Academy is home to a diverse group of students, who every day work to polish their unusual skills - sometimes on the job. Mihama now entrusts the misfit girls who attend it with guns and live ammunition. Paying their own safety no heed, these students are again and again plunged into dangerous extrajudicial missions - all for the good of the realm.

Akio Watanabe is providing the artwork and character designs, nanaca mai is providing the SD artwork, and MAGNUM is handling the backgrounds and weapon design. Ryuta Fujisaki is writing the story. Hitoshi Fujima of Elements Garden and Fuminori Matsumoto are composing the background music. Marina Kawano is performing the theme song "Ends of the Earth."

Frontwing released the first two volumes of the game with English text on Steam on April 25 (the same day Frontwing released the volumes in Japan), and plans to release the third volume on Steam on the same day as the Japanese release on July 28.

Frontwing had hosted a crowdfunding campaign for the game earlier this year, which raised US$183,027 to enhance the game's release. The enhancements include a physical version of the game, a physical English version of the manga adaptation, special packaging, and an English version of the Grisaia Complete Box.

Video game and visual novel translation company Sekai Project launched Frontwing's The Fruit of Grisaia on Steam in 2015 after meeting its Kickstarter goal for a Western release of the game trilogy. Frontwing and Sekai Project have also released other two games, The Labyrinth of Grisaia and The Eden of Grisaia, on Steam. Frontwing released the The Fruit of Grisaia bonus episode "The Leisure of Grisaia" on Steam in May 2016.

All three of the main games inspired anime and manga adaptations.
