Live-Action Gintama Film's Opening in Philippines, Indonesia Moved to August 23

Film opened in Japan on July 14, grossed more than 2 billion as of July 28

Philippine film distributor Pioneer Films and Indonesian cinema chain CGV Cinemas both announced last week that the opening date of the the live-action film of Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama manga has been moved to August 23 in both countries. For the Philippines, the movie will now open one week earlier than its original August 30 opening. For Indonesia, the movie is now delayed almost three weeks from its original August 3 opening.

The film opened in Japan on July 14. The film ranked at #2 in its opening weekend, selling 742,254 tickets to earn 982,291,500 yen (US$8.78 million) in its first four days. The film had the highest opening two days of any Japanese live-action film in 2017 so far. The film has surpassed 2 billion yen (about US$18.08 million) in earnings as of last Friday. The movie is the fastest live-action Japanese film released this year to reach 2 billion yen. The film's total box-office earnings are expected to surpass 5 billion yen (US$44.7 million).

Yūichi Fukuda (live-action HK/Hentai Kamen, Mr. Nietzsche in the Convenience Store) directed the film and penned the script. The film stars Shun Oguri as Gintoki Sakata, Masaki Suda as Shinpachi Shimura, and Kanna Hashimoto as Kagura.

UVERworld (Blue Exorcist, The Heroic Legend of Arslan) performed the film's theme song "DECIDED."

The manga has more than 50 million copies in print in Japan. Shueisha published the manga's 69th volume in Japan on July 4. The manga entered its final arc in July 2016.
