Historical manga about real-world woman Ono Otsū launched in 2009

This year's 17th issue of Kodansha's Be Love magazine revealed on Saturday that Waki Yamato will end her Ishtar no Musume: Ono no Otsūden (The Daughter of Ishtar) manga in the magazine's 22nd issue on November 1.

The manga tells the story of the real-life poet, musician, and artist Ono Otsū, who lived in the final years of Japan's Warring States period until the early Edo period. In the story, she has always possessed strange supernatural powers to look at people and see an aspect of their future. When she and her family move so that her father can serve the warlord Oda Nobunaga, the warlord takes interest in her and allows her access to the castle. She foretells a dark future for Nobunaga, but she is powerless to stop the Honnōji incident that claims his life and the life of Otsū's father and brother. She and her mother flee to Kyoto, where they come under the protection of the Kujō clan.

Yamato launched the manga in Be Love in 2009. Kodansha published the manga's 15th compiled book volume (seen above right) on May 12.

Yamato's Haikara-san ga Tooru manga inspired a 42-episode television anime adaptation by Nippon Animation that aired from 1978 to 1979. It also inspired a live-action film, a live-action television series, two live-action television specials, and two upcoming anime films that will open in Japan on November 11 and spring 2018, respectively. Warner Bros. Japan announced at Anime Expo in July that it plans to screen the films in the United States with English subtitles.

Yamato's Asakiyumemishi - The Tale of Genji historical shōjo manga also inspired an anime adaptation in 2009.
