'Fireworks' Anime Film Stays at #4 in 3rd Weekend at Japanese Box Office

Gundam debuts at #8, Pokémon falls to #9, Prisma Illya #1 in mini-theater rankings

Uchiage Hanabi, Shita kara Miru ka? Yoko kara Miru ka? (Fireworks, Should We See it from the Side or the Bottom?), the anime film adaptation of director Shunji Iwai's 1993 live-action drama of the same name, stayed at #4 in its third weekend at the Japanese box office for September 2-3. The film earned about 104,000,000 yen (about US$964,000) and sold about 78,000 tickets during the weekend. The film has earned a cumulative total of 1,186,282,500 yen (about US$10.88 million). The film is expected to earn a total of 4 billion yen (US$36.6 million) at the Japanese box office.

The live-action Kimi no Suizō o Tabetai (I Want to Eat Your Pancreas) film stayed at #5 in its sixth weekend. The film earned 102,101,500 yen (about US$940,386) from September 1-3, and it has earned a cumulative total of 2,873,112,500 yen (about US$26.46 million). The film is based on Yoru Sumino's novel of the same name. The book is also inspiring an anime film next year.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin V: Clash at Loum (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin V: Loum no Kaisen), the fifth episode of the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin anime, opened at #8. The film earned 92,717,300 yen (about US$850,913) for its opening weekend.

Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (Gekijōban Pocket Monster: Kimi ni Kimeta!), this year's Pokémon film, fell from #8 to #9 in its eighth weekend. The film earned 46,351,900 yen (about US$426,530) from September 1-3, and has earned a cumulative total of 3,310,203,600 yen (about US$30.46 million).

The live-action film of Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama manga dropped off of the top 10 chart in its eighth weekend. Studio Ponoc and Hiromasa Yonebayashi's Mary and The Witch's Flower (Mary to Majo no Hana) anime film also fell off the top 10 in its ninth weekend.

Gekijōban Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya: Sekka no Chikai (Movie Version Fate/kaleid liner Prisma ☆ Illya: Oath Under the Snow), the new anime film in the Prisma Illya franchise, topped the mini-theater rankings in Japan for the second consecutive week.

The Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! original video anime (OVA) dropped from #4 to #5 in the mini-theater rankings. The OVA, subtitled "Ai to Seishun no Sotsugyō!" (The Graduation of Love and Youth), is screening in eight Japanese theaters from August 26 to September 15. The anime is listed as the "series concluding chapter."
