posted on by Egan Loo
Doga Kobo returns to animate Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru. season

The official website for the Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru anime announced the second season's main staff and title on Wednesday. Tomoaki Koshida (episode director on Polar Bear's Café, Wagnaria!!3) replaces Takashi Naoya as the director, and the writing collective WriteWorks (Record of Grancrest War; production cooperation on Kizumonogatari, Tsukimonogatari) replaces Pierre Sugiura as the series script supervisors. Junichirō Taniguchi (Natsuyuki Rendezvous, Prison School) is returning to design the characters, and Doga Kobo will continue to animate for the new season.

The new season's title is Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru.. ("Zoku" means "sequel" or "continuation.") It will premiere in January.

The second season will have the same setting as the first season. The 47 Touken Danshi characters will return from the first season, including Yasusada Yamatonokami and Kiyomitsu Kashū, and new characters will also appear.

DMM's original Tōken Ranbu Online "sword personification training game" takes famous swords from Japanese history and interprets them as bishōnen. Nitroplus designed the characters and scenario. The game launched in Japan in 2015, and it has more than 1.5 million registered users. The game has acquired a large female fanbase and inspired a wide range of merchandise, as well as several manga and stage productions.

The staff describe the 2016 anime series adaptation Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru:

The year is 2205. The "historical revisionists" have begun attacks on the past in their plot to change history. The Saniwa, who have been charged with protecting history, can imbue life into objects. Strongest among these are the Touken Danshi. The story centers around their cheerful lives.

The first season of Tōken Ranbu: Hanamaru premiered on October 2, and concluded in December. Crunchyroll streamed the season as it aired in Japan, and Funimation is streaming the English broadcast dub episodes for the season.

Takashi Naoya (Luck & Logic co-director, Selector Infected Wixoss animation director) directed the first season at Doga Kobo. Junichirō Taniguchi (Natsuyuki Rendezvous, Prison School) designed the characters, and Pierre Sugiura (Barakamon) wrote and oversaw the scripts. Kenji Kawai (Ghost in the Shell, Eden of the East, Ranma ½) composed the music. Mitsuhiro Ichiki and Toshiki Masuda performed the opening theme song "Hanamaru◎Hiyori!" (Hanamaru Weather). The anime has a different ending theme song for each episode, performed by the show's cast.

The studio ufotable produced Katsugeki! Tōken Ranbu (Action Picture! Touken Ranbu), a separate television anime that ran this summer. It will have a theatrical film project.
